Overview
Quilt Software uses Microsoft Entra ID as the sign-in provider for 1Password. Once SSO is enabled for your account, you will use your regular Microsoft credentials (the same ones you use for Outlook, Teams, etc.) to unlock 1Password — no separate 1Password password or Secret Key required.
This guide covers three things:
- Switching to SSO the first time (one-time migration)
- Signing in to 1Password day-to-day
- Setting up 1Password on a new device
Before You Begin
Make sure you have the latest version of 1Password installed:
- Browser extension — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, or Safari: 1password.com/downloads/browser-extension
- Desktop app — Mac, Windows, or Linux: 1password.com/downloads
- Mobile app — iOS or Android: available in your device’s app store
Note: SSO requires 1Password 8. If you are on an older version, update before proceeding.
Part 1 — First-Time Migration (Do This Once)
When IT enables SSO for your account, you will receive an email from 1Password with a setup link. Follow the steps below before your grace period ends. If your grace period expires without completing this, contact the IT helpdesk at itsupport@quiltsoftware.com.
On the Web (1Password.com)
Important: Do not use an Incognito or Private browser window for this step.
- Open the setup link from your 1Password email, or go to start.1password.com/signin and sign in with your existing account password and Secret Key.
- A pop-up will appear: “There’s a new way to sign in.” Select Get Started.
- Select Sign in with Microsoft.
- Sign in using your Quilt Microsoft credentials (your @quiltsoftware.com email and password).
- You will be returned to 1Password. From now on, you will see a Sign in with Microsoft button instead of a password field.
- Proceed to set up your other devices (see Part 3).
In the Desktop or Mobile App
- Open 1Password and unlock it with your existing account password.
- A pop-up will appear: “There’s a new way to sign in.” Select Start New Sign-In.
- Select Sign in with Microsoft.
- Sign in with your Quilt Microsoft credentials.
- Enable notifications when prompted — this lets you quickly approve sign-ins on new devices in the future.
- Proceed to set up your other devices (see Part 3).
After completing migration, you will no longer need your 1Password account password, Secret Key, or Emergency Kit. Keep your Emergency Kit stored safely in case you ever need account recovery.
Part 2 — Day-to-Day Sign-In
Once SSO is set up, signing in is straightforward. If you are already signed in to Microsoft (e.g., you have Outlook or Teams open), 1Password will often sign you in automatically with no additional steps.
On the Web (1Password.com)
- Go to your team’s sign-in address: quiltsoftware.1password.com
- Enter your @quiltsoftware.com email address if prompted.
- Select Sign in with Microsoft.
- If not already signed in to Microsoft, enter your credentials.
In the Browser Extension
- Click the 1Password icon in your browser toolbar.
- Select Sign in with Microsoft. You will be briefly redirected.
- If already signed in to Microsoft, this completes automatically.
In the Desktop or Mobile App
- Open the 1Password app.
- Select Sign in with Microsoft. You will be redirected to a Microsoft sign-in page.
- Enter your Microsoft credentials if prompted (or it may complete automatically).
Part 3 — Setting Up 1Password on a New Device
When you install 1Password on a new device, you need to verify it using a code from an already-trusted device (an app or browser where you are already signed in). This is a security step that protects your vault.
Step 1 — Sign In on the New Device
If your trusted device has a camera:
- Open the 1Password app on the new device and select Sign In.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to scan the QR code displayed on your trusted device.
If your trusted device does not have a camera:
- Open 1Password on the new device and select Sign In → Enter account details.
- Enter your @quiltsoftware.com email and sign-in address (quiltsoftware.1password.com), then select Next.
- Select Sign in with Microsoft and sign in with your credentials.
- You will be prompted to enter a verification code from one of your trusted devices.
Step 2 — Get the Verification Code from a Trusted Device
On the device where you are already signed in to 1Password:
In the app (Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, Linux):
- A notification or pop-up will appear: “New app or browser found.”
- Open and unlock 1Password (tap the notification on mobile if you see one).
- Select Transfer key. An alphanumeric verification code will be displayed.
- Enter this code on the new device.
In the browser extension:
- Open and unlock the 1Password extension.
- Select Transfer key on the “New app or browser found” pop-up.
- Enter the code on the new device.
On 1Password.com:
- Sign in to start.1password.com on a browser where you are already linked.
- Select your name in the top right → Manage Account.
- Scroll to Pending Sign-Ins and select View next to the new device.
- Select Transfer key, copy the code, and enter it on the new device.
Security reminder: Never share your verification code with anyone — including IT staff. If you receive an unexpected verification code request, do not approve it and report it to IT immediately.
Troubleshooting
Issue | What to do |
Sign-in page asks for account password and Secret Key | Wait 30 minutes, then try again. If it persists, contact IT. |
Cannot find the verification code pop-up | Make sure the account you are enrolling is unlocked on the trusted device, wait a few minutes, then retry. |
Signed out every time you close your browser | Your browser may be clearing cookies on close. Check your browser settings, or contact IT — a policy may be clearing your session. |
Grace period expired without completing migration | Contact IT helpdesk for account recovery. You will be walked through SSO setup during the recovery process. |
Email mismatch error | Your 1Password account email must exactly match your Entra ID email. Contact IT if these do not match. |
